About Katie
Katie comes to Northside with a life that is full of both personal and professional experiences. Prior to pursuing a career as a psychologist Katie worked as a personal trainer for several years and focused on promoting physical health in her clients. Whilst in this role she noticed the undeniable connection that exists between ones physical and mental health and was drawn to develop a better understanding of the connections that exist between one’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviours and how these can influence one’s mental health for better or worse.
Since entering the field of psychology Katie has worked in a wide range of fields, including occupational psychology and through the NDIS providing therapeutic supports to participants with disabilities. In these roles Katie has worked with clients presenting with a variety of different psychological concerns. Katie has developed a strong understanding of the NDIS and how to best support participants to promote positive outcomes that will assist them to improve their functional capacity and to achieve their NDIS goals.
How Katie might support you
Katie thrives on adopting a collaborative approach within her psychological practice and encourages clients to actively engage in the intervention in way that makes them feel empowered and provides them with a sense of agency and autonomy over their own wellbeing. Through this process Katie encourages clients to identify their strengths, and to use these as tools that can create within the individual a strong sense of identify and mastery. Through her work with the NDIS Katie has experience working within a multidisciplinary team of formal and informal supports all of whom are working together to achieve positive client outcomes. Katie works relies heavily upon use of a play therapy to make children feel relaxed and comfortable whilst also engaging them in the lessons associated with the intervention.
Whilst Katie enjoys working with individuals from all walks of life, she has a developed a passion for supporting children struggling with neurodiverse conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Katie assists these individuals to adjust to and manage the functional impact that their neurodiversity can have upon their everyday lives, whilst also encouraging individuals to accept and embrace the uniqueness they embody. Katie is able to assist with the development of emotional literacy, emotional regulation skills, social skills, and the individual’s capacity to cope with periods of change or uncertainty.
Katie enjoys collaborating with parents in a non-judgemental manner to provide support and psychoeducation that will assist their children and their families to find balance and wellbeing. This can also include working with the parents of children who are struggling with sexual and gender identity issues or experiencing life transitions associated with emerging adulthood.
Katie also has experience with and has an interest in supporting individuals with a wide variety of psychological concerns, including depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and adjustment disorders associated with challenging periods of transition in one’s life.
Katie can adapt her therapeutic approach to match the needs of the client. She can be both calm and relaxed if needed, or she can be enthusiastic and playful. This approach is client-centred and demonstrates that Katie is committed to creating a safe space that is specific to the individual. She works primarily within the frameworks of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Play Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing.
