New Year's resolutions can be beneficial for mental health in several ways. Setting goals and creating intentions for the upcoming year gives individuals a sense of direction and purpose, which can help improve mental well-being. With 2024 coming to an end, we took a moment to ask some of our staff to learn how they view New Year’s resolutions and the potential impact and benefits they can have on mental health.
Here's what some of them had to say:
Forget New Year's Resolutions – I’m All About New Year’s Re-Evaluations
“For me, it’s not about drastic changes or fleeting goals. It’s about checking in with myself – focusing on holistic health, family, friends, and fitness – and finding balance in a busy role. When it comes to fitness, I need something bigger to work toward. Goals wrapped in events keep me accountable. Two years ago, I cycled 600km across Europe with my sister. Knowing that challenge was ahead kept me on track.
Next year? It’s Machu Picchu with my daughter. The thought of that adventure is enough to get me moving – not just to "tick it off," but to make the experience more enjoyable. Fitness isn't just physical. It clears my head, keeps me grounded, and gives me the energy to meet the demands of work and life. No "New Year, New Me" needed – just a reminder to keep moving forward.”
Press Pause: How Taking Time to Reflect Helps Us Live More Deliberately
“Intentionally setting aside time to take stock of our lives can be tricky in this fast-paced world! Slowing down and reflecting on the things that we hold important enables us to make more deliberate and life-giving choices in the future - all of which can move us closer to the type of person we'd like to be.”
“Pausing to reflect on the past year allows us to uncover patterns that may support or hinder your growth. In the rush of daily life, it’s easy to overlook our strengths and skip celebrating our successes. By taking time to acknowledge what went well, we can build confidence and draw on those wins when facing future challenges. Reflection isn’t just looking back—it’s a way to fuel progress moving forward.”
Looking Back to Move Forward: How Reflecting on the Past Year Sparks Growth and Clarity
“Reflecting on the past year has been a meaningful journey that has significantly enhanced my self-awareness and emotional growth. By looking back on my experiences, I’ve gained a clearer understanding of what truly matters to me. The struggles I encountered taught me valuable lessons that allow me to approach similar situations with greater wisdom and readiness.
Acknowledging my accomplishments, no matter how small, has also played a crucial role in building my confidence and sense of progress. This recognition motivates me to keep moving forward and encourages me to set new intentions that align with my core values. As I align my future goals with these insights, I find that this process not only deepens my understanding of myself but also fosters a more authentic and fulfilling life.”
